UPEPO 20th Anniversary !!!
by the Alumni President
Twenty years old! Very few knows that a University of the Philippines extension program exists in Olongapo City... and only a handful of these very few even knows that it has been in existence for two decades already! Yet, amidst the churning and buzzing of the city, UPEPO silently graduates many of the best and brightest minds in the city and surrounding areas.
You may not know it, but our roster of alumni includes doctors, government officials, bank managers, owners of various businesses in the city, managers and supervisors of big companies, professors, and many other accomplished people... still UPEPO continuous on producing more... silently and without much ado.
It all began in 1984. Then city mayor and now senator Richard Gordon saw the need for quality higher education in the city so he invited the University of the Philippines to put up a branch here. In that same year, through a Memorandum of Agreement between the city and U.P., UPEPO was born. No bangs and whistles but not a stillbirth too. Only a handful of students, and a handful of teachers... but that's all that matters to make knowledge start to flicker with life.
UPEPO never really had an excess of students, even now 20 years after. Not that only a few wants to get in, it's that very few actually pass the qualifying exams. Those who do get in, on the other hand, will have to face some very rigorous curriculum requirements; not a walk in the park as many students and graduates can attest to. To date, there are only about 150 who made it and passed the much feared compre exams. If you are one who did it, it's time to celebrate that feat once more!
On December 18, 2004, starting at 3:00 PM, the alumni and students of UPEPO will be celebrating her 20th anniversary at the Hard Rock Cafe along Magsaysay Drive, Olongapo City. It will be a simple but meaningful celebration with loads of fun for everybody.
There will be great food, drinks, games, raffle prices, a lot of reminiscing, and great food! Did I say that already? Ok, how does these sound: pork egg rolls for appetizer, pineapple macaroni salad, beef rolls in tomato sauce, honey orange glazed spareribs with walnuts, baked chicken with gravy sauce, pandan rice, and leche flan for dessert! Good ha? So don't miss it! For the students, a paltry fee of P300 should do it while for the alumni, P500 is what it'll take. Tickets are already being distributed so get yours now. Contact Connie Jimenez at 0921-601-4929 or any of the alumni and student council officers if you need more information.
The proceeds from this occassion will be used for UPEPO improvements including more books for the library. So, if you can donate something a little more or find a donor who can, we will be very grateful. Management books, even used ones, will be very much appreciated by all current and future students, I'm sure.
Be there! Let's have fun and do something meaningful at the same time!
