ARCHIVESC Elections Coming Up!by Danny J. PianoThe SY 2004-2005 Student Council Elections is coming up fast! Those who are interested to run for elective positions are advised to file their Certificates of Candidacies immediately (see Election Calendar for details). Everybody is enjoined to participate or at least be aware of what's going on. Flashback. Why is it that every student council election in the past seem to come and go with little attention from students? Why the lack of interest? Is it the method of campaigning, if any, too dry or too tame? Are UPEPO students just too busy to care? Is campus politics simply not our cup of tea? The SY 2003-2004 Student Council, however, intends to change these. Most probably not doable with a wave of a hand; but, whatever baby steps we can take towards improvement will go a long way. We have already started by laying out a foundation — the Student Council Constitution and the Student Election Code are now in existence and are available for viewing in this website. We have already put up posters around the school, will be giving ample time to those interested to file their candidacies, and will be providing an extended campaign period with lot less restrictions than U.P. Diliman's. This website can also be used to hear out the candidates; plus, the discussion forum can be used by anybody to voice their views and opinions. The Electoral Board, on the other hand will disseminate election-related information on a regular basis as we get closer to Election Day. As you can see, we have all the ingredients needed for really competitive elections. All we need to do now is get
involved. That shouldn't be so hard to do, is it? You are a U.P. student, after all. Act like one! |
