The UPEPO Student Election Code
by DANNY J. PIANO
SY 2003-2004 is a landmark year for UPEPO Student Council elections. This year, the elections will be guided, for the first time, with a set of election rules - the UPEPO Student Election Code. This Code had been long overdue but because it is difficult and time consuming to develop, the student councils in the past, although unquestionable in their desires to have it, simply did not find the time to do it during their tenures.
The SY2002-2003 Student Council officers have the same dilemma, but, are fortunate to have a little more determination. We decided to go ahead with the development of the Election Code. As in the UPEPO Student Council Constitution, the Election Code was based from UP Diliman's Student Election Code but was generally developed to appy to UPEPO.
It was still incomplete when the school year ended, but development continued on until the summer vacation. As a matter of fact, we have an officer who already graduated and by all definitions no longer a student and, therefore, a Student Council officer; but nevertheless, continued in providing her most valued help albeit in an unofficial capacity.
The final copy of the Election Code was submitted to the UPEPO Director for approval in June 7, 2003 and was approved the same day. Now that it is officially in place, it won't be long before we will find out how it will hold up — the elections is but a month away.
The council intends to stir student interest in the upcoming elections and every election thereafter. Hopefully, the Code will make our job easier. Article Date: 18 June 2003
